This kind of allegation is not the first time for OpenAI since the start of ChatGPT. This AI model was rolled out by company in the year 2022. Since then the company has been sued several times over copyright. The company is also being accused of training its AI on the copyrighted material of others.

In his latest social media post, Suchir wrote, “I did not know much about copyright, fair use at first, but ever since the lawsuits against the GenAI companies, I started taking a deeper interest in the issue.”

Who was Suchir Balaji?

Suchir Balaji — The author studied Computer Science from the University of California, Berkeley. After that, she did an internship at OpenAI and Scale AI. He was an early WebGPT developer at OpenAI. Then he was part of the pre-trained GPT-4 team.

He went on to spend about four years working at OpenAI before ultimately deciding to call it quits. Suchir realised that this technology would be more harmful to society in an interview with The New York Times. The majority of their concerns were how OpenAI was supposedly utilizing copyrighted data.

Suchir Balaji’s Friends informed the police

The death of Suchir Balaji happened on 26 November, but it became known on 14 December. Suchir was reportedly not attending calls by friends and colleagues. His colleagues found the flat locked from inside when they arrived. Following this, he reported the matter to the police. Suchir’s body was found inside when police used forced to break open the door of the flat and enter.
